Bee and Beekeeper’s Statistics

Started on 16/10/2004 and ended on 21/11/2004

For next time it is better to start on 15/09 in order not to face difficulties such as snow and rain. Though we started on 16/10 but still the honey had not been collected from most of beehives, so the registered output is less than the real one. Also most of beekeepers do not state the real output and information because it is a common habit in most areas.

Erbil and Kurkuk’s statistics are incomplete because most of the areas are out of our administration control.

What is pleasant is that the new hives are improved compared with the local past ones. The beekeepers are admitting that the new hives are better than the local in all aspects. All beekeepers are asking for new boxes. We should construct new-box making and bee requirements workshop projects to meet their needs.

Concerning the number of skilled beekeepers and the number of those who take care of bees, each of them have more than 25 beehives and they are 561 beekeepers. They are skilled and professional beekeepers and they encourage the developed bee projects in future and they deserve to take advanced payment of beekeeping project.

Most of the beekeepers are young and literate. Their education would be increased if they instructed. It is better that all areas have instruction courses in a way that to be at a desirable level and also to pay attention to women.

The serious problems for most of the beekeepers are VARWA, wasp, bee eater, although many attempts were made to overcome these problems such as:

A. For VARWA: Instructions have been giving continuously and the annihilators have been distributed such as APESTAN, VOLEX and BAIVAROL.

B. Bee Insects MRRA, this kind of insect can bee seen mostly in local hives. The weak hive is his lair. If the hive is strong and has bees it prevents this kind of ants to spread.

C. Wasp: If their kings annihilated in spring the problem would be solved.

D. Bee-eater: Most of the areas are suffering from the disadvantage of this animal. It is necessary to annihilate them while they are in their lairs during propagation in valleies and hills without any sides and organizations’ objection.

The number of the villages that have bees are increased still it is less that the desired number. In general most of the villages are abandoned and a large number of villagers migrated to the towns, in some areas we even do not see a person to take information from and to register them in the statistics. Actually this may have bad subsequences.

The numbers of beehives are unstable and the numbers are changed continuously. If we compare the number that would be registered today with the future numbers we see a great change. We may get less than this number in February and March and we may get more than this number in June but we consider autumn as a standard time for statistics.

This statistics had been conducted by a group of agricultural experts (Bee field of specialization) whom their names and the task location are written in the attachment of ministerial order No. 6979 on 11/10/2004.

It is a follow up of a basic point in the map of bee development in Kurdistan. It was completely complied with the clarifying map of bee and beekeepers’ statistics. Many tables for collecting information were prepared which are attached.
